The Penguins continue to be one of perhaps dozens of rumored landing spots for UFA forward Shane Doan. Nothing substantial has been said about Doan’s chances of going to Pittsburgh or anywhere else, but that doesn’t mean nothing has been said at all.
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun dropped this little number into an unrelated piece about Bobby Butler,
Phoenix captain Shane Doan is reportedly looking for a four-year, $30-million deal to leave the Coyotes. The talk is the Penguins are prepared to put a four-year, $24-million deal on the table if they haven’t already.
$6 million per season would be quite the offer from a club which has to extend offers to Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang in the next two years under the murky terms of a yet-unresolved collective bargaining agreement.
Whether the terms are correct or not, the offer is known. Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported an official offer from the Pens to Doan almost two weeks ago.
Doan is 35 and has never come closer to the Stanley Cup than advancing to the Western Conference Finals with the Phoenix Coyotes last season. The Coyotes could move or be dissolved apparently at any second, though Doan recently met with prospective-but-still-short-on-financing Phoenix buyer Greg Jamison.
This is the lowest common denominator of hockey news, but, eh.
